Before the vice presidential debate on October 4th, the Miller Center partnered with Longwood University to present a panel: The increasing power of the vice presidency—a view from the inner circle. 

The panel included moderator John Harris of Politico as well as panelists:

  • Barbara Perry, Director of Presidential Studies at the Miller Center; 
  • Roy Neel, former chief of staff to Vice President Al Gore; 
  • Eric Edelman, former assistant to Vice President Dick Cheney, U.S. Ambassador to Turkey and Finland, and Undersecretary of Defense for Policy; 
  • Jared Bernstein, former chief economist and economic adviser to Vice President Joe Biden. 

The panel discussed a wide rang of topics including the increasing power of the vice presidency, what the next vice president will need to do to succeed, and how to work with the president and the White House staff.
