First Year author David Martin, who wrote “Go comprehensive, go bold” in Volume 4: Controlling the borders, published an op-ed in The Washington Post“Donald Trump wants local police to enforce immigration laws. Here’s why they don’t.”

Martin examines the reasons why local police officers are often resistant to enforcing federal immigration law. One reason is that they are concerned about maintaining community policing, which includes good relations with the immigrant community. Another reason is that the long delay in any federal legalization program for long-term residents has resulted in an unwillingness to penalize long-term immigrants.
